The convocation ceremony of the graduating batch of 2019 of the Edinburgh Napier University, the collaborative partner of Spectrum Institute of Science & Technology (SIST) was held on the 29th of January 2020 at the Mt. Lavinia Hotel. The students received their priced degree for BSc (Hons) Microbiology and Biotechnology and BSc. Microbiology and Biotechnology at the ceremony. The convocation ceremony was attended by the Vice Principal, International for Edinburgh Napier University Mr. Micheal Greenhalgh and the academic staff representatives of the Edinburgh Napier university along with the management and the faculty of SIST.
The convocation ceremony commenced with the open declaration by the chairman of SIST, Mr. Jayanthan Kulasingham followed by the presentation of the graduates. University medals were awarded by the Edinburgh Napier University for outstanding academic achievements to Parami Pieris for BSc (Hons) in Microbiology and Biotechnology and Saravanagomathy Sithambaranathan for BSc. Microbiology and Biotechnology. Mr. Micheal Greenhalgh addressed the gathering on his graduate address where he highlighted on the importance of collaboration, research and innovation. The valedictorian Parami Pieris addressed the gathering and shared her experiences on the journey towards receiving this prestigious degree qualification. This was followed by the SIST graduate pledge lead by Saravanagomathy Sithambaranathan.
The chairman of SIST, Mr. Jayanthan Kulasingham addressed the gathering. He extended his best wishes to the graduates while encouraging them to pursue their higher education which was followed by the vote of thanks by Adhshyan Ganeshmoorthy, the President of the Spectrum Students’ Society.
SIST wishes these young graduates all the best in their future endeavours and welcome them to the diverse alumni of SIST. SIST strongly believes that these graduates will live up to the expectations of the mankind and serve the society by cascading their scientific knowledge through research and innovation.
Colombo, Friday 14th February 2020: The Spectrum Institute of Science & Technology (SIST) is the pioneering life sciences institute in Sri Lanka providing young aspiring students an opportunity to study globally recognized degree programmes in Sri Lanka. Stepping into its 19th year of academic excellence, SIST marks yet another milestone by collaborating with the prestigious Lincoln University College (LUC), Malaysia. In accordance to this, the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between SIST and LUC took place on the 27th of December 2019 with the participation of Chairman of SIST, Jayanthan Kulasingham and Vice Chancellor of LUC, Dr. Amiya Bhaumik.
The launch of LUC Malaysia was held today (14th) at the SIST Campus located at Kirimandala Mawatha, Colombo 05 under the patronage of the Vice Chancellor of LUC, Dr. Amiya Bhaumik and the Chairman of SIST Jayanthan Kulasingham. A highly reputed panel of lecturers, students of SIST and members of the media were also present.
Speaking at the launch Chairman of SIST Jayanthan Kulasingham said, “We are very happy to be collaborating with a prestigious university like LUC to bring a range of degree programmes to Sri Lankan students. The programmes span across various branches of study as we hope to attract students with different interests and capabilities”. The chairman further added that SIST is very excited to offer 10 globally recognized career oriented degree courses at affordable prices.
Under the MOU SIST will now provide the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Biomedical Science at the Faculty of Life Sciences, and the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering Technology, Bachelor of Civil Engineering Technology, Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering Technology (Aeronautics), Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Hons) in Electrical and Electronics and the Bachelor of Chemical Engineering Technology (Hons) at the Faculty of Engineering. Meanwhile, the Faculty of Business Management and Finance will provide the Bachelor of Economic and Finance (Hons), Bachelor of Business Entrepreneurship, Bachelor of Business in Banking and Finance (Hons), and the Faculty of Information Technology will have the Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) (Network Technology and Cyber Security) programme.
SIST will commence with these undergraduate degree programs with Lincoln University College that are recognized by the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka. All four years of the degree could be completed in Sri Lanka which contributes to the lower cost factor. SIST in collaboration with LUC, believes in providing value added education to students at an affordable cost under one million Sri Lankan rupees with up to 50% scholarships as per eligibility.
The programmes will be conducted at the modern campus, well equipped with four state-of-the-art laboratories and library facilities. The 30,000 sq. ft. facility, probably the largest undergraduate infrastructure facility located in the city of Colombo is a convenient and a comfortable location for student academics.
SIST encourages young students to engage in co-curricular activities through the weekly journal club sessions where students present a journal article of their choice at an open forum followed by discussion with the participation of the faculty as well as the entire student body. SIST further directs students to participate at various national and international conferences and training programmes.
Aiming at providing holistic education to all students, SIST facilitates various student oriented extracurricular activities through the Spectrum Students’ Society. The society functions under different avenues such as Community Service, the Green Army, Performing Arts, Sports, the Editorial Board and Visual Communication and Digital Media Teams that engage in a host of activities throughout the academic year. The highlight of the year is the much awaited annual concert “Sparque” which is a night of musical and dance extravaganza, organized as the main fundraiser for the society’s community and environmental service projects.
Established in the year 2002 as Lincoln College and then upgraded to Lincoln University College in the year 2011, LUC received a 5 star ranking in the year 2017 by the Ministry of Higher Education in Malaysia. The university is also a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and a full member of the International Association of Universities (AIU). Moreover, LUC is ranked 301+ by The World University Impact Ranking by Times Higher Education in 2019.
