OUR HISTORY
Spectrum Institute of Science & Technology (SIST) is the pioneering institute in Sri Lanka for modern technological higher education and has extended academic opportunities to enthusiastic young minds aspiring for a career in Life Science. Since its inception in 2001, incorporated under the Laws of Board of Investments, SIST has had several significant milestones in its 19 years of service to the nation.
Vinayaka Missions was established in 1981 with the founding of the TKVTSS Trust. Through its School of Information Science and Technology (SIST), in partnership with the Vinayaka Missions Research Foundation, the institution offered undergraduate and graduate programs in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. SIST has successfully produced distinguished alumni, including Dr. Pubudu Samarakoon, a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist at NEC OncoImmunity AS, Norway, and Dr. Minoli Perera, currently based in the United States.
Founded in 1916, the University of Mysore is India's sixth oldest university and Karnataka's first. Notably, it was the first university established outside British India. Accredited by NAAC with a Five-Star rating in 2000, it stands as a pioneer in higher education. In collaboration with the University of Mysore, SIST offered undergraduate programs in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology, recognized by the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka. Over a decade, these programs nurtured numerous aspiring professionals, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to pursue diverse careers in molecular research, clinical sciences, environmental studies, food technology, nutrition, and business.
SIST's Students' Association fosters community engagement, soft skills, and service. The Green Army promotes sustainable living, while the Rotaract Club engages in community service and professional development. The annual Realms of Life Science exhibition introduces students to biotechnology and biomedical sciences, inspiring them to explore these fields. SIST has a strong commitment to excellence in life science education, spanning over two decades.
Edinburgh Napier University, a public institution named after the renowned Sir John Napier, is located in Edinburgh, Scotland. With over 19,500 students, the university offers programs across six schools: Applied Sciences, Health & Social Care, and Arts & Creative Industries. Recognized for its teaching quality, internationalization, and employability, Edinburgh Napier University achieved a five-star rating in these categories in the 2019 QS Stars rankings. SIST's collaboration with ENU opened new doors for affordable international education in Sri Lanka. Students from diverse backgrounds could now pursue UK degrees without the high costs of studying abroad. The BSc. (Hons) in Microbiology and Biotechnology and BSc. (Hons) Biomedical Science programs, which include a supervised research project, provide a truly global educational experience.
The Spectrum Students' Society was relaunched in 2015 to foster student development and cater to the growing student population. This platform aimed to enhance students' interpersonal skills, communication abilities, and individual talents while maintaining academic excellence. Previously separate initiatives like the Green Army and Spectrum Performing Arts Society were integrated into the broader Spectrum Students' Society. Today, the society operates through various avenues, including Community Service, Green Army, Performing Arts, Sports, Digital and Multimedia, and the Spectrum magazine.
