Spectrum Institute of Science & Technology (SIST) is thrilled to announce a groundbreaking partnership with Code.org, the leading non-profit organization dedicated to expanding computer science education globally. This initiative aims to bring essential coding and computer science skills to students across Sri Lanka, enhancing their learning experience and preparing them for the future.
A New Era of Computer Science Education
In a bold move to enrich the educational landscape, SIST, founded under Sri Lanka’s Board of Investments in 2001, will collaborate with Code.org to implement a comprehensive computer science curriculum in schools throughout the country. This initiative will target students from Grade 1 through Grade 13, ensuring that a wide range of young learners benefit from this transformative program.
Strategic Implementation and Training
The rollout will commence with outreach to key stakeholders including the President’s Office, the Ministry of Education, Zonal Directors, and school principals. The goal is to engage 4-6 teachers per participating school, who will be meticulously selected and trained in collaboration with Code.org. These educators will then deliver the curriculum, which includes a focus on computational thinking, programming skills, problem-solving, and digital literacy, among other essential learning outcomes.
Curriculum and Delivery
SIST’s collaboration with Code.org will ensure that students receive 2 hours of computer science instruction per week. The curriculum is designed to be both engaging and accessible, using block-based programming languages like Scratch and text-based languages such as Python and JavaScript. Students will be encouraged to develop their creativity, collaboration skills, and persistence through hands-on projects and real-world problem-solving activities.
Monitoring and Reporting
Throughout 2024, SIST, alongside the involved stakeholders, will monitor and manage the implementation of this curriculum. Regular progress reports will be provided to ensure the program’s effectiveness and to make necessary adjustments. This ongoing evaluation will help in understanding the impact of the program and in making improvements as needed.
A Vision for the Future
By integrating computer science into the core curriculum, SIST and Code.org aim to foster a new generation of tech-savvy individuals equipped with the skills necessary for the 21st century. The program will also promote equity and inclusion, providing opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds to explore and excel in the field of technology.
Spectrum Institute is committed to delivering quality education and nurturing holistic development. This partnership with Code.org represents a significant step towards achieving these goals and empowering students to excel in their future careers and become active, successful global citizens.
