The University of Mysore is one of the oldest Universities established in 1916. The University has a tradition of carrying out many educational innovations and has been providing higher education to over forty thousand students every year. Both regular and correspondence courses were offered by the University till 1995. During the year 1996, the Institute of Correspondence and Continuing Education (ICCE) of the University emerged as a full fledged Open University in Karnataka. The academic and research strength of the University has been well established. Steps have been taken to know the strengths and weaknesses and to improve the quality of higher education through peer reviewed academic audits.
The distinctive strengths of the University lie in providing high quality teaching and research with a strong focus on pure and applied sciences, humanities, social sciences, language and fine arts, sports and youth affairs. Most of the Postgraduate Departments have gained international repute and are known for excellence in research. A good number of research projects have been undertaken by the University Departments with support from National/International Institutions and funding agencies.
The expertise available within the University of Mysore is a rare privilege for offering courses both under regular and outreach modes. The increasing employment opportunities in small, medium and large scale sectors in India, demands the University to broaden the scope of its academic reach through a separate Centre for Outreach Programmes. The courses offered under this Institution, Spectrum Institute of Science and Technology, Colombo, Sri Lanka, are on par with the regular courses of the University of Mysore. These are conducted under an MOU by adopting the University procedures and norms. Examinations will be held for all students by the University at respective centers. The University has its own tradition in educating the needy people of the society. There is nothing comparable to knowledge. The University with its past experience and the great tradition is opening the portals to knowledge through developments to the remote places of the country. I welcome you to the University of Mysore and be a part of the process of life long learning.
