COMMUNITY SERVICE


AUTISTIC SPORTS DAY



The autistic sports day took place on the 23rd of October 2019 within the walls of Spectrum Institute of Science & Technology, Colombo 05. Reach Beyond is an autistic and child development centre located in Borella and we were lucky enough to be able to organize their first sports day. There were more than 40 volunteers from SIST who volunteered to pay weekly visits to reach beyond, spend time with the kids and train them for their different sports activities. It was a very unique experience to almost all of us and was definitely worth spending time and energy for. The sports day started at 9am and concluded successfully around 12 pm. The kids even performed a drill display. It was the first project of the community service avenue of 2019/20 and it was quite a successful and a satisfying day.


ELDERS’ HOME VISIT



Christmas with the elders at the Good Shepard Convent Nayakkakanda, Hendala was yet another project of the community service avenue. It took place on the 21st of December 2019. Around 30 students from our campus visited the grandmas at the home and sang carols, presented each of them with a gift and we listened to them sing and tell stories of the past; we watched them dance to their favourite tunes and gave them a delicious lunch. It was a very heart-warming experience to us young adults and the lessons learnt on that day were many.


BLOOD DONATION CAMP



The annual blood donation campaign 2020 took place on Sunday the 9th of February 2020 at the National Blood Bank. Both faculty and students actively participated in this worthy cause. It was a successful day where 35 volunteers donated blood and found the hero within them.


GREEN ARMY



The green army of SIST commenced their projects for the year 2019/2020 with the charity begins at home project. Where cleaning of the premises was done by the students themselves with the incentive to make our own institute a zero-polythene zone. A “Shramadhana” thus, took place on the 19th of October 2019 with participation of all students and faculty members of spectrum.

Paving the way for a zero polythene- zone calls for educating staff and faculty of SIST on how to reduce, reuse and recycle polythene. The eco brick project was introduce to help salvage the amount of polythene used daily and propose a creative and effective way of storing and reusing polythene. A Christmas tree made of eco bricks collected from students, friends and family was displayed on the day of the SIST Christmas party 2019.

To further the cause along with eco brick project an 'herbal garden' with concept of growing your own remedies in your home garden was initiated on the16th January 2020 completed by planting 50 plants. The eco bricks used for the Christmas tree was reused as a fence.


PERFORMING ARTS



"The annual Christmas celebration of Spectrum Institute of Science & Technology was held on the 20th December for the year 2019.

Breath of Heaven '19, organized by the Performing Arts wing of Spectrum Students' Society was indeed a night to enjoy and to create memories with the colleagues. The gathering started off with a harmonious carols service by the choir of SIST. Members of SSS shared the true spirit of the season with a thoughtful gift distribution to the students of Siri Sariputta Maha Vidyalaya, Colombo 02. Thus, began the night of celebration with a visit from dear Santa with lots of presents for everyone. The night proceeded with a delightful Christmas dinner and DJ and ended on a high note leaving the holiday spirit to linger on every beating heart. "

The annual alumni gathering of the Spectrum Institute of Science & Technology was organised by the Performing arts wing of the Spectrum Students’ Society on the December 13th at the campus.


SPORTS


Carrom’20



The carrom tournament was the first event of the Sports Avenue. It was held on the 22nd of February 2020. The tournament was kept on open double basis and many teams from all the three houses participated to compete for the championship. After many nail biting moments, Griffith house was crowned the champions defeating Hershey on a knockout final match. All the players displayed great sportsmanship and enthusiasm towards sports.

EDITORIAL CLUB



“The Spectrum” online blog was handed over to the succeeding committee for 2019-2020 in July 2019. The editorial board committee was formed and an online meeting proceeded to discuss new ideas and plans for the year ahead. It was collectively decided that monthly themes would be put forward and the outstanding photograph, illustration and article submitted will be chosen by some of the faculty members and be rewarded with a gift voucher. The blog was successfully launched on the 5th of August 2019 at the Spectrum Auditorium

The editors along with the President of the SSS encouraged the attendees to contribute to the blog. Posters promoting the theme were directed to be designed by the Visual and communication media board, led by the Creative director, and was shared via social media and displayed on the notice boards at the institute premises. Emails were sent out at the beginning and mid period of each month, as reminders for article submission.


VISUAL COMMUNICATION AND MASS MEDIA



The first ever “SSS eSports Tournament” was conducted successfully on the 30th of November 2019 at Game Edge E-Sports, Kohuwela. With over a 100 participants fighting for a price pool of 45,000/=, the first ever SSS eSports tournament offered an adrenaline pumping and yet a fun filled experience to all who were present at the event. Sponsored by Maximum eSports, one of the top gaming clans in Sri Lanka, the initiative of the Visual Communication and Digital Media Avenue of Spectrum Students' Society of 2019/2020, was an immense success confirming that together we work the better we succeed!
